Coriander herb plants are also know as cilantro, but you have to take note that coriander is the true name of the plant as well as its seeds. If only the leaves of the plant are used, it is called as cilantro.
Obviously, they are two different herbs but came from a single plant. The coriander seeds can provide you with a spicy lemon flavor that is commonly used in Mediterranean and Indian dishes. Cilantro on the other hand, provides a citrus-like taste that is strikingly different from the taste of the seeds.
This plant is considered as an annual that can grow up to the height of 2 feet tall. Take note that it can become a fussy plant when it comes to the overall care and watering, thus you have to be patient and meticulous when caring for your plant if you want to produce good quality herbs.
The cilantro leaves are packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium and calcium but the seeds do not. The seeds are not nutritious, but contain fiber and a minimal amount of manganese.
When planting coriander, the roots of the plant are quite sensitive and they cannot tolerate transplanting well. It is recommended to sow the seeds in the location you want, preferably outdoors. In case you are going to plant, you have to wait until the frost has passed before putting out the seeds.
The seeds should be about half an inch buried beneath the soil with the space of 12 inches apart. In case you planted them close to one another, it is best to thin them out later once they start to grow. Take note that the small plants can already be used since they provide a milder flavor than the mature ones. Make sure that the plant is growing in a sunny area so that it can get the most warmth during the summer season.
When watering the plants, perform it regularly but avoid soaking them all the time. Take note that the roots cannot endure if left soaked in water, so it is best to water once the soil is dry. Apparently, excessive drought can lead to early bolting or going to seed. At this point, coriander can become fussy.
The application of fertilizer should be done once or twice throughout the season so that your plants will achieve a bushy and appealing appearance. If you want to harvest good quality seeds, it is ideal to utilize a low-nitrogen formula or you will end up with a plant that only produces leaves.
