philadelphus plant

The Philadelphus plant, also known as "mock orange" because their flowers look like oranges and lemon trees, although not related to the citrus family.

Most philadelphus are deciduos, their leaves are opposite on the branch quite simple, with serrated margins measuring up to 14cms long. The white flowers are highly scented especially in the early morning or evening, they have four petals and sepals about 1-4cm wide. Flowering time early summer. It will not have time to start producing flower stems for next growing season.

When the shrub has finished flowering prune them stems back by about 1/3, new stems will grow back to provide next year’s flowers. Start pruning out one in three of all the old stems cutting right back to about 2-3 inches from the ground.

Philadelphus grow well in most well drained but moist soils.
